what is alkalinity?

Total alkalinity indicates the amount of dissolved alkaline material in pool water (carbonates, bicarbonates and hydroxides).
Alkalinity is directly linked to pH, so if the alkalinity is too high, the pH will tend to rise constantly, leading to cloudy water, scaling and the need for continuous chlorination.
The opposite will happen if the alkalinity is too low, producing corrosion, eye irritation and greenish water.
The ideal Total Alkalinity is 80 to 150 ppm.
