When we talk about pool water maintenance, we often focus on chemicals, pH or filtration, but there is one accessory that goes unnoticed and can make the owner's job much easier: the chlorine tablet dispenser.

what is a tablet dispenser?

The tablet dispenser is a simple, inexpensive and very reliable system designed to maintain a constant chlorine level in the pool water without the need to manually replace tablets every few days.

It consists of a sturdy plastic tank (usually installed in the return of the filtration system) that is filled with trichlorine tablets. Through a manual valve, the flow of water through the tank is regulated, gradually dissolving the tablets and releasing the chlorine into the water.

Important: multifunctional tablets should not be used in this type of dispenser, as their components can release chemicals that are incompatible with a controlled dissolution

why is it a practical solution?

• Autonomy: it allows you to forget about chlorine for weeks. Ideal for owners who only use the pool on weekends or in second homes.
• It avoids the use of the skimmer as a tablet dispenser, something very common but not recommended, as it can damage the internal plastics due to the high concentration of chlorine in that area.
• Constant and homogeneous dosing: it maintains a more stable level of disinfectant in the water, helping to avoid chlorine peaks or drops.

where to install it?

The doser is installed in line, after the filter and the heating equipment (if any), before the water returns to the pool. Installation is simple. Check the installation manuals

• Use only slow dissolving trichlor tablets.
• Check the tablet level every 2-3 weeks, depending on the size of the dispenser and pool usage.
• Adjust the flow valve according to chlorine demand (more in summer, less in spring or fall).
• Perform periodic free chlorine checks with a test kit to adjust dosing if necessary.

Types of chlorine dosing systems for swimming pools

Within the range of tablet dosing systems, we can clearly differentiate between two main categories: dosing systems with installation and dosing systems without installation.

The choice between one or the other will depend on the type of pool, the frequency of use and the desired level of automation

1. Dosing units with installation

These models require a small amount of plumbing work to be incorporated into the pool's purification system. They are divided into two types:

(a) In-line dispensers

• They are installed directly in the return line of the hydraulic system, just after the filter and (if applicable) the heat exchanger or heat pump.
• They require cutting the pipe and inserting the in-line proportioner.
• Recommendation: it is always convenient to install it with a bypass, which allows isolating the proportioner for maintenance without affecting the rest of the system.

b) Offline dispensers

• They are connected by means of external accessories (fittings, hoses) to the return circuit, but without cutting the main pipe.
• They offer a simpler and more flexible installation, especially in existing systems where the circuit does not need to be modified.
• They can also be installed with bypass for greater convenience.

2. Non-installed (floating) dispensers

• These are the typical floating chlorine dispensers, made of chemical resistant plastic.
• They are inserted directly into the pool tank with trichlor tablets (usually 200g).
• They have a regulating wheel at the base to adjust the dissolution speed.
• They are ideal for above ground pools, small private pools or for homeowners looking for a temporary and uncomplicated solution.
• Tip: it is important to remove the floating dispenser when people swim, to avoid direct contact with the concentrated chlorine.
